On being a Friend

Despite my interests in defence it comes as a surprise to people I know that for over 40 years I’ve been an attender, and later a member, of the Religious Society of Friends, better known as ‘Quakers’. At a point in my younger years where I suspected there might be something we can call ‘God’, but with reluctance to try and define or constrict Him/Her/It into a human creed I found that Quakers gave me a lasting spiritual home where I was free to explore and question, and to meet others with a wide variety of views united by a trust that ‘there is that of God in everyone’.

Quakers are a non-creedal ‘church’ springing from Christian roots but open to insights wherever they come from. I’ve met Quakers who are Christian, Buddhist, pagan, Hindu and Sufi Muslims and even some who are atheists.

These days I also attend a local Anglican Church as it’s the closest to where I live and shares my liberal theology - but at heart I’m still a ‘Friend’ and feel that our community has much to offer in a world that is heading towards conflict and a violent future.

Follow this section of my blog if these things are of interest to you :)
